In our show, “Daruname” Intensive care specialist and member of the scientific board of Shahid Beheshti Medical University Dr. Mohammad Reza Hashemian had joined us through a telephone call where he said that Remdesivir was first used in Iran and was not included in our treatment protocols and strict measures were used during the prescription.

“After it became a part of our protocols, it was used excessively which was a mistake. It should be reconsidered. Unfortunately, this medicine was prescribed to the outpatients too. The Ministry of Health turned it into a business.”

Hashemian also said that most of the Corona patients can recover without using any particular medicine.

He also explained the story behind the Favipiravir saying: “This medicine is a Japanese drug; Its brand name was changed to Molnopiravir so the US can keep its patent; During the initial stage of Corona Pandemic, it was prescribed beside Corton Medicines in some countries. Many more drugs are also being developed to counter this virus.”

He further said that after the Dexamethasone’s success in the UK, Iran also started to use it. “While Favipiravir was prescribed beside Coltra drug for 10 months by the Ministry of Health but it was ineffective.”

“Dexamethasone is being used simultaneously with Remdesivir and Favipiravir. They have their anti-virus capabilities too. In addition, Favipiravir has the least side-effects but the only drug which had reduced the death rate among the Corona patients has been the Dexamethasone.”

Dr. Mohammad Reza Hashemian told our host that we should not limit ourselves to the results of researches; Instead, we must pay attention to the specialists who have had success in their efforts countering this disease.

He also said that during the first week of infection interferon medicines are prescribed. “There are some other medications too, but Oxtra and similar drugs have also proved their effectivity.”

Hashemian added that a single medication protocol didn’t turn out well, as it was expected in Iran. “If we want to reduce the death rate, we must end this one-sided national protocol system.”
